Penn E&R has been named a recipient of the Environmental Business Journal’s (EBJ) 2019 Business Achievement Award in recognition of its innovative stormwater management solutions.
Each year, business research publication EBJ recognizes firms worldwide for their growth and innovation. Nominations are accepted in short essays, and the awards are determined by a committee of EBJ editorial advisory board members. Penn E&R is honored to have received the Project Merit: Stormwater Management award.
“In what is widely regarded as a stable market, a number of companies exceeded the norms of low single-digit growth with double-digit growth or ambitious ventures into new practice areas or technology development,” said Grant Ferrier, president of Environmental Business International Inc. (EBI, Inc.), publisher of EBJ.
Penn E&R submitted a nomination essay detailing its design and implementation of innovative stormwater management controls at an active industrial site as part of a massive redevelopment project. Penn E&R was among the first environmental consulting firms in Pennsylvania to successfully design and install Managed Release Concept (MRC) Best Management Practices (BMPs) in the form of two modified slow-release infiltration basins. The designs paired old with new and included a retrofit of an existing detention basin on the site. Particularly in areas with challenging subsurface conditions, MRC BMPs greatly reduce stormwater flow rate out of a basin through the use of restrictive underdrain systems, resolving a natural lack of effective stormwater infiltration. Penn E&R worked directly with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) to develop this precedential, new age solution and completed installation of these controls in 2019. PADEP has since added the slow-release infiltration basin to its stormwater management BMP manual.
Basin #1: Before design and retrofit of slow-release infiltration basin. Basin #1: After design and retrofit of slow-release infiltration basin. Basin #2: Before design and installation of slow-release infiltration basin. Basin #2: After design and installation of slow-release infiltration basin.
